U.S. Launches Fusion Energy Strategy 2024
The United States launched its Fusion Energy Strategy 2024 at a White House Summit on June 6, marking two years since the launch of the Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy. This plan lays an effective framework for advancing fusion energy commercialization.
The Strategy is formed around three central pillars:
- Closing S&T Gaps to a Fusion Pilot Plant
- This pillar will be pursued by: realigning the SC FES Program to support the Bold Decadal Vision and a new SC FES vision; developing and following a new national fusion S&T roadmap that is aligned with the U.S. fusion industry; and accelerating R&D by leveraging innovative partnerships and collaboratives.
- Preparing the Path to Commercial Fusion Deployment
- DOE will build off of the activities supported by the crosscut team to address challenges to “realize a commercially relevant, private sector-led fusion pilot plant in the 2030s, followed by commercial fusion deployment scale-up throughout the 2040s.” Taking steps now is crucial to ensure a smooth and effective transition to commercially viable fusion power.
- Building and Leveraging External Partnerships
- Realizing the Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy requires expanding the scope of existing partnerships and generating new ones, including interagency, international, private sector, academia, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), non-profits, philanthropy, communities, and state/local governments.
